Welcome

Korea and Seattle

Almost immediately upon returning from Paris, Smith left again, this time travelling around the world in the opposite direction for the Korean war. He was a member of the Third Armoured Division of Fort Knox.

Smith's work with wax crayons was first noticed in 1953, after his return from Paris. While developing this technique, he said, "What I am trying to recreate is the impression which you recieve when you stand in total darkness and look at a stained glass window." Though he was inspired by the windows of Chartres, he acknowledged the ancient origins of the technique, which creates a long lasting work of art.

After returning from the war, Smith attended the University of Washington, in Seattle. He studied primarily under Mark Tobey who became his mentor. Tobey would often give his "fatherly wings" to Smith in his letters.
