Early Life (1929-1951)

Arthur Hall Smith was raised in Norfolk, Virginia, where he attended public schools, including Maury High School. His talent was recognized at a young age by teachers who gave him his first one-man show in the school library.

He was recognized not only as a great artist, but a strong student and a playwright. In fact, he authored a tribute to Matthew Fontaine Maury, the namesake of his High School, and graduated first in his class.

In 1947, Smith was awarded third place in an art competition held by Scholastic Magazine (New York). His third place award in painting gave him a scholarship to Illinois Wesleyan University.

His early teachers included Margaret Dodson of Norfolk, Kenneth Loomis at Illinois Wesleyan University, and Lamar Dodd at University of Georgia.

An article in the Christian Science Monitor on October 16, 1947 discussed Smith's early thoughts on painting, including the goals of his art and frustrations in training.
